About this work
A hand-colored satirical print shows a startled, stout man in a red coat and yellow breeches recoiling from a grinning blue devil with pink plumes and a spiked tail who reaches toward his pocket. Handwritten captions in the speech bubbles carry the dialogue, and the inscription below reads The New Property Tax Paying His Respects to John Bull. The work is dated 1806 and is attributed to Thomas Rowlandson.
