About this work
This etching shows a satirical scene in a cluttered study, with a figure in a cloak pointing a rod toward circular emblems filled with crowded scenes. A bust with a telescope and a winged creature stand near speech banners reading "Time is past" and "Time was," while figures climb a staircase at right. Thomas Rowlandson made this print, titled A peep into Friar Bacon's study, in 1784.
