About this work
A hand-coloured caricature shows two comically exaggerated soldiers in pink and yellow military coats, one gesturing with a pickaxe and the other holding a cane beside a stone building. A sign reading Gate of St Nicolas, a grassy embankment with two sets of legs visible, a fence, and a barrel and cannonball sit in the foreground. The print is by Henry William Bunbury, dated 1773, and illustrates a scene from Laurence Sterne's Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy.
