About this work

A pen-and-ink drawing shows a row of well-dressed audience members in a theatre box, several leaning forward and laughing, one woman raising opera glasses to her eyes. Behind them a crowd fills the tiered seating, and in the lower right corner a bearded cellist bends over his instrument in the orchestra pit. The work is signed and dated 1897 and is catalogued by the museum as a print by William Henry Walker.
