About this work
A pen-and-ink political cartoon adapts the composition of Washington Crossing the Delaware, with a standing leader in a tricorn hat at the bow of a crowded boat. Rowers and passengers are labeled with issues such as trusts, railroad rate, postal frauds and land frauds, while ice floes bear inscriptions like U.S. Senate. The 1906 print by William Henry Walker, after an original by Alfred E. Lindy as signed, uses dense hatching to convey choppy water and a distant elephant-marked column.
