About this work
A 1915 drawing by William Henry Walker titled The thing will not melt. Uncle Sam stands beside a large cauldron labeled U.S. Melting Pot, lifting a small German figure above it with a stick while a crowd of top-hatted citizens watches. On the right, immigrants carrying suitcases and bundles walk toward a building with flags reading Ellis Island.
