About this work
A caricature drawing in pencil and ink shows a German army officer in a spiked helmet with an eagle ornament, kneeling and reaching out with open hands toward a sailor. The sailor, wearing a cap ribbon reading "German Navy," cups his hand to his mouth in a dismissive gesture, while a sword lies on the ground beside the officer. The work is titled "The beginning of the end" and was created by William Henry Walker in 1917.
