About this work
A charcoal-and-ink drawing shows a large armored figure on a rearing horse, trailing a barbed wire line toward a crowd of pale, hunched figures and spear-bearing soldiers. Smoke rises behind them over a battlefield littered with fallen bodies, and shields and labeled figures suggest national stand-ins. This 1914 print by William Henry Walker is titled "If he wins".
