About this work
A pen-and-ink drawing shows a ship's stern lettered "HAPPY NEW YEAR" with the date 1910 on a cap worn by a figure at the rail. Beside it, a man in a suit tumbles headlong through clouds, having lost his top hat, while a rope ladder dangles from the ship. This 1909 print by William Henry Walker is titled "Dropping the pilot."
