About this work
A charcoal-style drawing shows a young woman in a long skirt with the word civilization written on her hem, raising an umbrella to fend off a scowling, disheveled man in a cap who reaches toward her. A basket has tipped over at her feet, spilling food onto the ground, and a fence and another figure stand in the background.
