About this work

A pen-and-chalk style study in graphite and wash shows a muscular bearded figure leaning over a round shield-like roundel, with his arm extended across the lower foreground. Loose hatching and softened shading model the torso and the curled hair, while faint contour lines suggest the surrounding drapery.
