In 1582 Annibale Carracci opened a painters' studio in Bologna with his brother Agostino and his cousin Ludovico. It came to be called the Incamminati, and it was built around drawing from life. In 1595 he travelled to Rome to work for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese at the Palazzo Farnese. There he made hundreds of preparatory sketches and led a team painting The Loves of the Gods on the ceiling of the grand salon. He died in Rome in 1609 and was buried near Raphael in the Pantheon.
