About this work

This Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated 1848, depicts a busy roadside scene with travelers in conical hats, a carried palanquin, and porters bearing lacquered boxes. A row of shops with hanging textiles lines the road beside a green hillside dotted with pines, and the cartouches read Tokaido and Narumi. The work is held by the Library of Congress.
