About this work
A multicolored Japanese woodblock print shows several figures in layered robes and kimono, including a woman in a teal kimono with a patterned obi and a samurai in a blue dotted hakama holding a sword. Stylized faces, exaggerated expressions and a decorative paper ornament above suggest a theatrical street scene. The work is attributed to Utagawa Kuniyoshi, dated 1850, and held by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
