Kuniyoshi drew tattoos on the heroes of the Suikoden, a popular Chinese tale, and the idea soon spread into Edo fashion.
That series began in 1827 and made his warrior prints hugely popular. He was the son of a silk-dyer and joined Utagawa Toyokuni's studio in 1811. When the Tenpō Reforms banned prints of actors and courtesans, he turned to comic pictures that disguised them, and some mocked the shogunate. He also drew cats in place of people, and his most important pupil was Yoshitoshi. Browse 485 works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from 10 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
