About this work

A large battle scene shows dense ranks of uniformed infantry and mounted cavalry clashing across a dusty field, with a cannon in the foreground and a village set ablaze under billowing smoke. Rolling hills and a pale sky frame the action, which is rendered in a detailed, painterly style. This 1843 painting by Alexander von Kotzebue, held by the Hermitage Museum, depicts The Battle of Kulm of 17 August 1813.
