About this work
A young woman in a cream silk dress with a black ribbon at her neck leans over an open leather-bound book on a table draped in green cloth. Stacked volumes, loose papers, and a broom lie around an elegant interior with a red folding screen, a tapestry, and a classical figurine. Béranger painted this work in 1848, and it is held by the Hermitage Museum.
