About this work
An etching on cream paper showing two men locked in a struggle, one bent forward and gripping the other around the body while both stand on uneven ground with a sparse grassy edge behind them. The fine hatched lines model the heavy coats, trousers and faces, and the signature Ensor is visible in the lower left corner, with the date 1896 inscribed in the margin. The work is catalogued as Het gevecht by James Ensor and dated 1896.
