About this work
This etching by James Ensor, dated 1891, depicts a robed, long-haired figure raising fish with a dense crowd of caricatured faces filling the foreground and a banner-filled procession in the background. Fish and crustaceans are scattered along the lower left edge, and the printed title reads La multiplication des poissons, referring to the miracle of the loaves and fishes. The fine hatched linework builds the faces and crowd textures across the sheet.
