About this work
This engraving shows the Adoration of the Magi set within a richly rendered classical interior of columns, arches, and a spiral staircase, with the Virgin seated holding the Christ child. Kneeling and standing figures in exotic dress approach with gifts, while a bright star shines above and an elephant appears through an arched opening. The print is attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1569, and its Latin inscription references the star and the gifts of the Magi.
