Maarten van Heemskerck

In Rome, Maarten van Heemskerck filled sketchbooks with drawings of ancient sculpture and buildings, and he used them for the rest of his career. He trained with Jan van Scorel in Haarlem and spent four years in Italy from 1532. Back in Haarlem, he became president of the city's Guild of Saint Luke. He made many drawings for printmakers, among them a set of eight Wonders of the World with the Colosseum shown in ruins. In 1572 he left Haarlem for Amsterdam to avoid the Spanish siege of the city.
