About this work
This engraved print, titled The Capture of Tirsah by Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1569, shows armed figures with shields, spears and a standard crossing a stone arched bridge while a palace burns above them. A dense crowd of soldiers and a rearing horse appear at the right, with a tower bearing the inscription naming Martinus Heemskerck as inventor and Philippus Galle as publisher. The Latin caption printed along the lower edge describes the scene in verse.
