About this work
This engraving, attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1569, shows soldiers carrying a lifeless body on a litter past a city gate. Workers heave large stone blocks amid collapsing buildings, toppling towers, and smoke rising from the burning city. A Latin caption runs along the lower edge beneath the scene.
