About this work
This engraving by Maarten van Heemskerck, dated 1569, depicts the Tower of Babel as a vast stepped structure with obelisks, arches and figures climbing its terraces. In the foreground a commander with a spear and workers react to fragments of the tower falling from the sky, while a spiral column and a reclining lion stand to the left. The Latin verse beneath the scene refers to the builders' ambition to reach the heavens.
