About this work
A hand-coloured caricature by Thomas Rowlandson titled The Trumpet and the Bassoon shows two elderly figures asleep side by side in bed, their mouths open in exaggerated snores. The man wears a red nightcap and the woman a white cap tied with a blue ribbon, while a ringed hand rests on a quilt scattered with red dots. The print was published by W. Holland in London in November 1803.
