About this work

This painting by Maerten de Vos, titled The Adoration of the Shepherds, shows the Nativity scene with the Virgin Mary kneeling beside the infant Christ lying in a straw-filled manger. Shepherds crowd the foreground, one in a yellow tunic and another holding a staff, while an elderly figure in a red cloak stands behind them beside an ox and a donkey. Angels hover above and on the right, and a distant hillside shows more shepherds tending their flock beneath a glowing sky.
