After the iconoclastic riots of 1566 wrecked the art in Flemish churches, Maerten de Vos was one of the artists asked to fill them with new altarpieces. He was born in Antwerp, trained under his father and then spent several years in Italy. The Italian biographer Carlo Ridolfi wrote that he worked in Tintoretto's studio in Venice. Back in Antwerp he took over the history painting that Frans Floris could no longer supply. About 1,600 prints were made after his designs, and they spread his work across Europe and the Spanish colonies. Browse 117 works by Maerten de Vos from 22 museums, free to download in HD.
