About this work

A skeleton reaches toward a kneeling, startled man in a landscape while a figure hangs from a gallows at left and another person lies sprawled on the ground at right. The scene is rendered in pale washes of brown, grey and pink, and the title identifies it as an unpublished Thomas Rowlandson watercolor from 1815 made for the English Dance of Death.
