About this work

This etching shows a figure bent beneath a large wooden cross while a kneeling figure tends the ground in the foreground, and a crowd of onlookers fills the background. Dense crosshatching forms a dark mass above the scene, contrasting with the lighter figures. The work is Jean-Louis Forain's Christ Carrying the Cross (seventh plate), dated 1910.
