Jean-Louis Forain began as a caricaturist for Paris journals and later drew for the Figaro for more than 30 years. Born in Reims, he moved to Paris with his family at age eight. A friend of Edgar Degas for over fifty years, he showed work in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions, starting in 1879. His pictures show Parisian entertainments like the racetrack, the ballet and busy cafés. In 1931, shortly before his death, he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
