About this work
A lithograph titled At the Bailiff's by Jean-Louis Forain, dated 1891, shows a well-dressed man in a top hat leaning on a cane at left while a bearded man with a bag waits at a counter. A clerk behind the counter attends to a woman in a feathered hat and fur boa, with shelves of papers filling the background. The work is rendered in soft crayon-like tones on cream paper.
