About this work
This engraved print titled Birth of Pharez and Zara by Maarten van Heemskerck, dated 1566, shows a crowded interior where attendants gather around a bed while a newborn is bathed in a metal basin in the foreground. A Latin inscription along the bottom edge and a citation to Genesis 38:27 identify the biblical subject. The densely hatched linework and architectural details reflect the printmaking conventions of the period.
