About this work
This wood-engraved illustration, published in Harper's Weekly, is arranged as a collage of vignettes showing soldiers marching and singing with rifles and bayonets raised, a mounted officer saluting, and a seated man on a barrel. Musical staves and song titles such as "Glory Hallelujah" and "Dixie" link the scenes, and the page is credited to Winslow Homer, 1861.
