About this work
This engraved print, titled David with Goliath's Head before Saul by Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1556, shows a young David holding up the severed head of Goliath before a seated, bearded king in a tent. Armored soldiers with spears and halberds surround the scene, while a kneeling attendant beside a crown and a sword occupies the lower right. A Latin caption along the bottom identifies the biblical episode from 1 Samuel 17.
