About this work
An engraved print titled David before Saul, attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1556. A seated, crowned king raises a spear toward a young harpist standing at left, while armored soldiers and bearded figures fill the architectural hall. A Latin inscription along the bottom edge refers to the evil spirit that came upon Saul.
