About this work

This etching shows a small rowboat with a single oarsman in the foreground on choppy water, while a steamboat trailing dark smoke moves across the river in the middle distance. A low shoreline with windswept trees and a distant hill closes the composition under a heavily clouded sky. Charles-François Daubigny made this print in 1862 under the title Steam Boats (Les Bateaux a vapeur).
