About this work

A seated nude figure, mostly enveloped in a flowing grey drape, hunches forward with the head bowed into the arms, set against a dark wooded arc with bare trees and a pale hilly horizon. The drawing uses soft chalk-like shading with touches of gold and white highlights, and small cups and leaves lie on the ground at lower right. Elihu Vedder's The Magdalene is dated 1884.
