Elihu Vedder's father cut off his allowance, and that ended his first stay in Italy. Back in the United States during the Civil War, he made a small living from commercial illustrations and painted Lair of the Sea Serpent. When the war ended he left America to live in Italy and had a home in Rome. He's best known for his fifty-five illustrations for Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. He also decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Library of Congress in Washington, and his murals can still be seen there.
