About this work
This engraving shows the biblical scene of Balaam on a donkey confronted by a luminous angel wielding a sword amid crumbling classical ruins overgrown with vines. Statues in niches and a Latin inscription along the lower margin frame the scene. The print is attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1554.
