About this work
A crowd of women in traditional coastal dress, with white caps and embroidered bodices, stands on a stone quay gazing toward a dark sea while others wave white cloths. A girl in a yellow-trimmed bodice clings to an older woman in black at the front, while a swirl of wind and spray curls across the foreground. The drawing is executed in crayon and colored pencil, dated 1896 and attributed to Théophile Alexandre Steinlen.
