Cats turn up all over Théophile Steinlen's work, and he even published a book of cat designs, Dessins Sans Paroles Des Chats. Born in Lausanne in 1859, he moved with his wife Emilie Mey to Montmartre in Paris. There the painter Adolphe Willette brought him into the crowd at Le Chat Noir, and that led to poster work for Aristide Bruant. He often painted the harsher side of life in Montmartre and worked with the anarchist and socialist press. Some of his illustrations were done under a pseudonym so he could avoid political trouble.
