About this work

A charcoal-style sketch shows a stern officer in a spiked helmet with a large mustache standing at right, while hunched and bowed civilians with lowered heads occupy the left. A small distant figure and faint wisps appear on the horizon at right. Jean-Louis Forain made this print in 1919, and the French caption beneath reads "Si ils avaient vaincu."
