About this work

A pencil and watercolor sketch on warm tan paper shows a uniformed soldier in a peaked cap and long coat standing at center, with a woman in a dark headscarf bending toward the right and a small figure standing at the left edge. The loose, sketchy lines and washes suggest an architectural background of arches and walls. The work is attributed to Jean-Louis Forain and dated 1914, titled German Soldiers and French Child.
