About this work

This engraving shows a young woman being led forward by a helmeted soldier while a boy named Daniel raises his arm to halt the procession before a robed judge and a crowd of onlookers. The scene is set on a stepped platform beside columns and an arched doorway, and a Latin caption at the bottom reads that she is led to execution but is called back by Daniel. The work is attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck and dated 1563.
