This engraving by Maarten van Heemskerck, dated 1563, shows three figures in a rural landscape: a ragged beggar with a staff and basket, a chained and barefoot prisoner, and a hooded executioner with a sword who stands over a fallen body. A city burns on a hill behind them, and mountains and a bridge stretch across the distance. Dutch and Latin verses appear beneath the scene.
