About this work
A ruined Gothic church with a steep roof and pointed gable stands on a grassy hilltop at golden hour, with a flock of birds wheeling above it. Small figures and a dirt path lead along the slope while trees and shrubs frame the foreground, and a distant valley opens to the left. The painting is signed and dated 1854 by Carl Geyling.
