About this work
This watercolor drawing by William McIlvaine, dated 1862, shows the rear of the Moore House near Yorktown, Virginia. A weathered wooden building with a tall brick chimney stands among large shade trees, while a small figure group in red trousers gazes toward a river dotted with sailboats. A handwritten note at the bottom describes the view looking upon York River where the terms of capitulation were agreed upon, by which the British army surrendered to General Washington.
