About this work
A watercolor drawing shows a white wooden house with a columned porch on a grassy rise beside a river, with a group of figures gathered on the porch and an American flag flying from a tree. Tall trees frame the composition, and masted boats are moored at a log-lined shore under a pink and orange sky. The work is attributed to William McIlvaine and dated 1862, with a handwritten note identifying the house as the residence of Mr. Custis, later Mr. Washington.
