About this work
A satirical drawing shows a uniformed soldier standing with one arm outstretched amid rubble and ruined architecture, while two other soldiers sit among the debris. A handwritten French caption beneath reads that the Empire is being blamed and that the viewers now live under an agreeable Republic. The print is dated 1918 and is attributed to Jean-Louis Forain.
