A horseman in a red cloak gallops through a dark forest while a pale, bearded supernatural figure and several spectral female figures reach toward him from among the trees. The work is a pen, ink and watercolor drawing, signed and dated 1849, by Moritz von Schwind, illustrating Goethe's poem Erlkönig.
